i think the answer here is, Malty is the Yard, therefore when one is unavailable, detained in some underground high-tech complex, the other is too.
It's hard to imagine anyone or anything managing to detain Malty, unless he wanted to be. I think we can definitely rule out "gone to Prestatyn". Mr A used to call him "Mystic Malty" and I did wonder. Hmmn.
