I've no idea what they were actually symbolising, but it looks to have the air of those fantastic opening ceremonies for the olympics, commonwealth games etc, where the history of man's athletic acheivement and brotherhood is represented by a couple of blokes on stilts and a woman rolling around in a big plastic ball, and so forth.
That seems a reasonable interpretation.
